Potato And Cauliflower Curry Recipe / Alu Gobi

Today , I would like to share with you an interesting recipe. Its a vegetarian delight.  Vegetables as we know is an edible plant generally used for cooking or eating raw. Today's recipe is cooked with such vegetables that cant be eaten raw. Now , quickly think of the names of two such vegetables . Relax , don't stress ! Its as easy as potato and cauliflower. The combination of these two vegetables turns out to be a recipe that is prepared in almost every household in India. I normally , prepare it on thursdays , as thats the day we eat only vegetarian food. This recipe is called by different names ; alu phulkopi ( in bengali ) , alu gobi  ( in hindi) and potato cauliflower curry ( in english ).

Ingredients:

  • cauliflower ( 1 small whole )
  • potato ( 3 medium )
  • onion ( 3 medium )
  • tomato (4 medium )
  • garlic cloves ( 6 to 7 )
  • green chilli ( as per taste )
  • turmeric powder ( 1 tablespoon )
  • red chilli powder ( 1 tablespoon ) 
  • coriander powder ( 1 tablespoon )
  • cumin powder ( 1 tablespoon ) 
  • garam masala powder / kitchen king masala ( 1 tablespoon )
  • salt to taste
  • water ( 2 cups )
  • whole cumin seeds ( 1 tablespoon )
  • oil : 4tablespoon

    now the recipe :
  • chop onion ,  tomato ,  garlic and green chilli and keep aside.

  • cut the cauliflower florets ( 1 small whole cauliflower ) and marinate with a pinch of turmeric powder and salt.

  • cut the potatoes into cubes ( 3 to 4 medium sized ) and again marinate with a pinch of turmeric powder and salt.

  • now heat oil and lightly fry cauliflower and keep aside.


  • also fry potato in the same oil and keep aside.



  • heat the remaining oil in a non stick pan and add whole cumin seeds.

  • and allow it to crackle.

  • add chopped onions and saute till it turns golden brown.

  • now add the green chilli and garlic and saute for a minute or two.

  • at this stage add the tomato and continue sauting.






  • now add all the powdered spices and keep sauting till oil starts separating from the paste.






  • add the cauliflower and potato and mix the paste well.

  • now add water and salt as per taste.

  • keep cooking till you get your desired consistency.



  • and finally place it in a serving bowl. goes best with chapati / rice.


P.S.: you can adjust the amount of powdered spices if you want your dish to be less spicy.
